Review: The Saved in the City “Free and Fearless” Conference

I went to the Saved in the City Conference last year and was only able to experience a small amount of the spirit-filled amazingness because I had other obligations that weekend. However, I promised myself that this year I would register early and convince as many of my friends as possible to attend with me. We had such a great time and I’d like to share with you some highlights from the weekend as well as my personal experience.

Friday Evening Praise + Worship

I didn’t attend the praise and worship last year, so this year was a great treat for me! My friends and I watched as the auditorium filled with hundreds of women from all over (almost 2,000 they said – wow!). They opened the Friday evening service with a little background of the Saved in the City organization and how it came to be! Brittany Morton is the founder and she started with a small group of women doing bible study, from her living room to the wellness center at A&M to the Von Braun Center. To see where her vision started to where it is today is truly an inspiration and a blessing to so many. Brittany blessed us with an overwhelmingly moving word about the ‘Woman at the Well’. The way she told the story was in a way that I never heard and it left many in tears and filled with the Holy Spirit. She reminded us how God sees something in all of us just as He did the woman at the well. No matter what we have done in our lives or what our past may look like, there is still a purpose for our lives. This message was followed by the alter call. The praise team and their rendition of “Free” by Kierra Sheard had me on my feet and in tears. The spirit of the Lord truly filled the auditorium and so many lives were touched and blessed by the Holy Spirit. Many were rededicating their lives to Christ and it was so moving. My friends and I left that evening on a spiritual high and eager about Saturday’s events.

Saturday Morning Praise + Worship / Morning Session

Phineka Friend delivered our morning word and she talked about one of my favorite stories in the bible, the story of Hosea and Gomer. She spoke in the spirit of Gomer and how Hosea didn’t care that she was a prostitute, he was obedient to the Lord in taking her as his wife and no matter how many times she ran from him he went looking for her. This story and the way she shared it touched my soul. She was transparent in sharing her past struggles and how she overcame and, despite what she had done and been through, she was blessed with a husband who loves her unconditionally. It’s so wonderful to hear about God’s love for his children through the different stories in the bible and even in the stories of ministers he’s placed in our paths.

Breakout Sessions: The Married Woman

Some of my friends and I went to the married woman session which consisted of three speakers delivering a word for about 20-30 minutes each. My sister in Christ, Terri Little of Terri Little Ministries, delivered a word about finding balance in marriage. She talked about how our relationships with God need to be first in order for other things in our life to be balanced. If you are finding yourself stressed, irritable, not spending intimate time with your spouse, etc. then you must ask yourself how much time have you been spending with God. She also discussed the importance of meeting the needs of your husband. Sa’Brina Lampley-Wheeler delivered a message entitled “From the Pretty Things to Prayer” and talked about how marriage shifts from the pretty stuff we see at the wedding. She talked about how marriage is a ministry and our assignments in marriage is our spouse. Her husband Anthony Wheeler followed her in talking about spiritual gifts and how to discover your spiritual gift as we all have one.

Afternoon + Evening Sessions

In the afternoon, SITC provided time for women to shop, get pampered and create vision boards. There were many wonderful vendors selling clothes, jewelry, books, purses, candles, etc. It was so nice to see so many women using their talents in hair and makeup to serve others. I didn’t get to attend the vision board party (I was busy eating). We sat in for a moment on the panel discussion of wisdom which consisted of older women sharing their knowledge and wisdom on relationships and marriage.

The best part of the evening was the comedy show featuring the Playmakers. In particular, I enjoy Kevonstage’s Instagram posts, so when I heard he would be at the conference I knew I had to be there! He’s just as funny in person as he is on social media. He and the Playmaker’s did various “church” jokes that left the crowd in stitches from laughing so hard!

The night ended with a Pink Party celebration. The ladies of SITC came down the aisle of the VBC auditorium in their pink skirts and SITC t-shirts with giant pink beach balls. As we sang and rejoiced about being “Free and Fearless” they threw the balls in the audience and we watched as the balls bounced back and forth in the air trying desperately to be able to hit at least one. Confetti then filled the air as the leaders reflected on the time we had and shared their gratitude. Women left this conference truly feeling free and fearless!
