I’ve been blogging for about four years now and somewhere along the way I finally got the hang of things. More recently I’ve been researching ways to improve my blog, increase views and bring in more revenue. I’ve learned and utilized many of the tips that I’ve come across and developed a plan for implementation, but the common tip discovered has to be my favorite right now and the one that is my main focus since I haven’t done it in the four years I’ve been blogging. This tip is to be consistent!! It sounds so simple, but it can be difficult to be consistent when you don’t have direction or purpose.
Why consistency matters //
Consistency is what helps build your credibility and competence and it makes you identifiable. If you aren’t consistent in your message, your branding, and your work then people won’t take you seriously. People need to know to some degree what they can expect from you each time they come across your brand or product. We are creatures of habit, so when you develop something where people are in the habit of seeing, following, buying, then you build and increase your audience. But if you fall off of that production trail, then so does your audience. People need something they can keep coming back to and that’s why consistency matters.
Identifying your direction and purpose helps build consistency //
When you have a clear idea of your direction and the purpose behind your brand and product, then others will as well. Believe it or not, no matter how many blogs, no matter how many t-shirt and accessory lines, or how many life coaches (and there are a ton – a new one pops in my feed everyday, but I digress lol) there are in this world, there is room for you and people will be interested in what you have to offer, they just have to know what it is! Everything you put out business/blogging wise, should tie back into the purpose behind your brand and blog. You have to be strategic and intentional in what you produce so that it’s concise and consistent across the board.
Being consistent in your social media //
This was a big one for me and if you follow me on social media you will notice I cleaned up my IG (and working on FB) a lot. At one point I was just posting random pictures on my @sheexperienced_ account, which started off as my blog account, then became my personal and blog account and now is just my blog account (which still has the personal touch)! I have a specific look and feel I’m going for and I wanted my IG to reflect my blog and not be random, but be detailed and focused (kinda like me)! If something doesn’t fit with the look I’m going for, I won’t post it. Making sure that your business related social media accounts reflect the message and overall purpose of your blog or business is important. Your social media accounts should be a snapshot into what your brand is all about. It’s also important to make sure your handles on each account are similar if not the exact same so that you can be easily found.
Once you get it, it gets easier //
It’s hard to initially be consistent when you don’t see results you desire. Often times we think because we don’t see the results we must be doing something wrong. We then get discouraged, start over or go in a new direction based on what we think is popular. Then that doesn’t work either and we get discouraged, start over and the cycle continues. Once you start something that has passion and purpose behind it, you won’t see immediate overnight results, but it’s important to push past that and keep going until what you’re doing becomes routine. Starting and stopping over and over only causes you to loose momentum, but if you stick with it, you develop routine and habit, others take notice and the desired results will follow. It just takes time.
Consistency gets your efforts noticed //
If you’re trying to lose weight and post your workouts on IG daily or if you’re a blogger and have developed a weekly schedule, others will notice your efforts. It doesn’t matter what you are doing or trying to promote, you can achieve absolutely any result you want by taking consistent action towards achieving your goals. Sometimes we think we aren’t talented enough or someone who’s doing something similar is more talented, but consistency and hard work beats talent every time. Just like the saying, “practice makes perfect”, consistency is that practice you want to develop. You literally have to practice being consistent until you perfect it! When you are consistent and others recognize your progress, that’s a sign that things are moving in the right direction for you.
One last thing I learned through being consistent is that your blog, business or brand should make you excited! If you have no direction or purpose, you aren’t going to be consistent because you aren’t excited. What you’re doing and promoting should excite you to the point where you want to do whatever you can to reach your goals.
Sometimes learning the hard way can be the best way because it enables you to help others along the way. – Sherelle G.
